The phrase “United We Stand” has recently been made popular as an expression of our unity as a nation in a post 9/11 world. Sadly what is missing is the second half of the original saying; “,divided we fall.” I was suprised to discover that it was not Ben Franklin who originally coined the phrase, but rather Aesop, a Greek storyteller who lived from 620 to 560 BC. This should not suprise me as I know that as a nation we are ethnocentric, Americancentric, and now I fear, Republicancentric. I too am a part of this culture. Yet I seek to find the truth, to walk my virtue boldly, and to be part of a solution, not the problem. This, I think, is going to take some time as there are so many things to consider.
Like many of my peers, I am really pissed off by the recent election results. Did my vote even count? Now, like many others, I find myself reflecting and wondering what’s next? So many questions running through my head: Do I run away? Become more active? Can a two-party system really work? Should we blue states secede? If so, how? What might this new state look like? Should I join a militia, the marines, blog, or the peace corps? Who is telling the truth, Bush, or bin Laden? Do we owe the world an apology? Would it be accepted? What are we united against? Who is the enemy? Are we even justified in this action?
I have few answers to these difficult questions but, together dear reader, perhaps we can sort this out before history repeats itself. In the meantime I will continue my (re)searching…
