(re)naissance
Theologian and existentialist philosopher Paul Tillich once commented, “What we call the ‘Renaissance’ was participated in by about one thousand people.”
That is a jolting thought, but revolutionary endeavors often start in exactly that fashion, with a small number of evolved souls exploring new territories of culture and consciousness.
More jolting is to think that 35,000 people participate in Burning Man each year and they are perhaps more different, from the societal norm, than their sixteenth century counterparts. How will we look back on this period of western civilization in say, 2250? Are we in the midst of a great paradigm shift led by a vanguard of cultural creatives, and if so, how many of us are there?
